Ninth Injury Prevention through Biomechanics Symposium

Sponsored by Wayne State University
and the
Centers for Disease Control

June 9 - 11, 1999

For the ninth consecutive year, the Bioengineering Center at Wayne State University will sponsor and host the Injury Prevention through Biomechanics Symposium . The Symposium features presenters from around the country. Past meetings have brought participants from around the U.S. and the world, with the fields of medicine and engineering represented. Both academic and industrial representatives have found useful information presented at the Symposium in the past.

In conjunction with this year's CDC Symposium, Wayne State's Bioengineering Center will sponsor a 60th Anniversary Symposium in honor of the sixty years of research on impact biomechanics conducted at the Center.

On June 9 through 11, 1999, a series of lectures will be presented on experimental and numerical modeling aspects of research in injury biomechanics. Session topics will include "Biomechanics from Head to Foot," "Mathematical Modeling and Human Surrogates," "Advanced Restraint Design," "Spine Biomechanics," "Tissue Level Studies: Brain and Muscle," and "Vehicle Safety and Injury Prevention." The preliminary program and informational brochure is available in pdf format. If you are interested in specific lectures, please check this site during the first week of May to confirm the lecture schedule.

This year's meeting will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Novi, Michigan. Information on the hotel, including directions and reservation details, are available in the preliminary program.

The registration fee of $250 provides a participant with a copy of the Symposium Proceedings as well as continental breakfast and lunch on the three days of the conference. A student registration rate of $100 is also available with documentation of student status. Registrations received after May 15, 1999, will be subject to a $20 late fee. A registration form is available on-line.

A Celebration Banquet will be held on Wednesday, June 9, at the Novi Hilton in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Bioengineering Center. The keynote address will be given by E.S. Watkins, Professor of Neurosurgery, The London Independent Hospital, and Medical Delegate for Formula 1 auto racing on the topic of Safety Issues in Motorsports. Tickets will be available for $40 per person on a space available basis until June 1, 1999. Separate invitations will be mailed out to the banquet. Tickets may be purchased at the time of registration or at the time the invitation response card is returned with your meal selection. If you wish to attend the banquet without registering for the conference or have not received your invitation, please contact Jill Shook at 313-577-1344.
